The Criminal / 범죄자

A young man of strong body, weakened by hunger, 
sat on the walker's portion of the street stretching his hand 
toward all who passed, 
begging and repeating his hand toward all who passed,
begging and repeating the sad song of his defeat in life, 
while suffering from hunger and from humiliation. 

강한 체격을 가졌으나 굶주림으로 허약해져 버린 한 젊은이가 
보행자들이 지나다니는 길거리 한 모퉁이에 앉아 
오가는 사람들에게 손을 벌려 동정(同情)을 구하고 있었다. 
그는 배고픔의 고통과 자신의 처지에 대한 굴욕감(屈辱感)으로 
그의 좌절된 삶을 울부짖으며 지나가는 사람들에게 
계속 손을 내밀며 간절하게 도와주기를 간청했다. 
 
When night came, his lips and tongue were parched, 
while his hand was still as empty as his stomach. 

밤이 되어 그의 입술과 혀는 말랐고, 
텅 빈 그의 배처럼 여전히 그의 손에는 아무것도 없었다. 

He gathered himself and went out from the city, 
where he sat under a tree and wept bitterly. 
Then he lifted his puzzled eyes to heaven while hunger was eating his inside, 
and he said, "Oh Lord, I went to the rich man and asked for employment, 
but he turned me away because of my shabbiness; 
I knocked at the school door, 
but was forbidden solace because I was empty- handed; 
I sought any occupation that would give me bread, 
but all to no avail. In desperation I asked alms, 
but They worshippers saw me and said 
"He is strong and lazy, and he should not beg." 

그는 자신을 추스르고 도시 밖으로 나가 나무 밑에 앉아서 비통하게 울었다. 
그리고 자신의 일상이 되어버린 굶주림으로 인해 휑한 눈을 들어 
하늘을 바라보면서 말했다.
"오 하느님, 저는 일거리를 찾아서 부자들에게 갔지만 
그들은 나의 초라한 차림을 보고 저를 외면하였습니다. 
저는 학교의 문을 두드렸지만, 
그들은 제가 돈이 없다고 학교에 입학하는 것을 허락하지 않고 
입에 발린 위안의 말들만 쏟아냈습니다. 
저는 한 끼의 식사를 위해 어떠한 일이라도 제가 할 일을 날마다 찾았으나, 
그 어느 누구도 저에게 일자리를 주지 않았습니다. 
절망에 빠진 제가 그들에게 간정한 도움을 요청했으나 
그 훌륭한 그 사람들은 나를 보고 이렇게 말했습
"저 자는 튼튼해. 그러나 게을러서 구걸을 하고 있지."
 
"Oh Lord, it is Thy will that my mother gave birth unto me, 
and now the earth offers me back to You before the Ending." 

"오 하느님, 저의 어머님은 하느님의 뜻에 따라 저를 낳았습니다. 
그러나 지금 이 세상은 제가 미처 저의 삶을 살아보기도 전에 
저를 하느님에게 돌아가라고 강요합니다.

His expression! then changed. 
He arose and his eyes now glittered in determination. 
He fashioned a thick and heavy stick from the branch of the tree, 
and pointed it toward the city, shouting, 
"I asked for bread with all the strength of my voice, and was refused. 
Not I shall obtain it by the strength of my muscles! 
I asked for bread in the name of mercy and love, but humanity did not heed. 
I shall take it now in the name of evil!" 

바로 그때 그의 표정이 바뀌었다. 
그는 일어났고, 단호한 결정을 내린 그의 눈은 반짝반짝 빛나기 시작했다. 
그는 나뭇가지를 꺾어 굵고 단단한 몽둥이를 만들었다. 
그리고 도시를 향해 겨누며 외쳤다. 
"나는 나의 힘으로 먹고 살아갈 길을 늘 찾아 헤매었으나 
결국 아무것도 찾지 못하고 모두 거절당하였다. 
이제 나는 내 팔뚝의 힘으로 그것을 손에 넣을 것이다. 
나는 사랑과 자비의 이름으로 빵을 구하였으나, 
사람들은 그 어느 누구도 나에게 관심을 기울이지 않았다. 
그러므로 이제 나는 악의 이름으로 그것을 빼앗아 쟁취할 것이다."       

The passing years rendered the youth a robber, killer and destroyer of souls; 
he crushed all who opposed him; 
he amassed fabulous wealth with which he won himself over to those in power.
He was admired by colleagues, 
envied by other thieves, and feared by the multitudes. 

세월이 흘러 그 젊은이는 사람들을 죽이고 
그 사람들의 영혼을 파괴하는 강도가 되었다. 
그는 자신에게 반항하는 모든 것을 철저히 부수었고 
힘으로 사람들의 것을 빼앗아 엄청난 재산을 모았다. 
그는 사람들에게 공포의 대상이었으며, 
수많은 강도들의 우상이었고 강도들의 부러움도 함께 받게 되었다. 

His riches and false position prevailed upon the Emir 
to appoint him deputy in that city 
- the sad process pursued by unwise governors. 
Thefts were then legalized; oppression was supported by authority; 
crushing of the weak became commonplace; the throngs curried and praised. 

그의 부유함과 가짜로 꾸며진 명성이 왕의 귀에까지 들어가자 
현명하지 못한 왕은 그를 그 도시의 대리인으로 임명하였고, 
이 슬픈 이야기는 지도자들에 의해 지속되었다. 
그리하여 그 강도는 공인된 지배자가 되었고, 
자신의 권위에 의지하여 사람들을 억압했으며 
이제는 약한 자들을 짓밟는 일이 흔해빠진 일상사가 되어버렸다. 
그리고 사람들은 그의 비위를 맞추고 칭송하기에 바빴다.
 
Thus does the first touch of humanity's selfishness 
make criminals of the humble, 
and make killers of the sons of peace; 
thus does the early greed of humanity grow 
and strike back at humanity a thousand fold! 

이렇게 자기본위의 인간들이 행하는 이기주의의 첫 손길은 
그것을 겪은 비참한 사람들을 범죄자로 만들어 
평화로운 삶을 살아가는 아이들을 죽이는 살인자가 되게 한다.
그리하여 사람의 탐욕이 뿌린 작은 씨앗은 점점 자라서, 
자신과 수많은 사람들을 뒤덮는 해로움이 되어 다시 돌아오게 한다.
