The Hymn Of Man / 인간의 찬가

I was,
And I am.
So shall I be to the end of time,
For I am without end.

나는 존재했었고
나는 존재하고 있다.
나는 끝이 없는 존재이기에
나는 시간의 끝까지 존재할 것이다.

I have cleft the vast spaces of the infinite, 
and taken flight in the world of fantasy, 
and drawn nigh to the circle of light on high.

나는 무한의 광대한 공간을 헤치고 환상의 세계로 날아가 
저 높은 곳에 있는 빛의 고리 가까이에 갔다. 

Yet behold me a captive of matter.

이제 물질의 포로로 살고있는 나를 보라. 

I have hearkened to the teachings of Confucius,
and listened to the wisdom of Brahma, 
and sat beside the Buddha beneath the tree of knowledge.

나는 공자의 가르침에 귀를 기울였고 브라만의 지혜를 들었으며
깨달음의 나무 밑에 계시던 부처님의 옆에 앉아 있기도 하였다.

Behold me now contending with ignorance and unbelieving.

지금 무지와 불신으로 싸우고 있는 나를 보라.

I was upon Sinai when the Lord showed Himself to Moses. 
By the Jordan I beheld the Nazarene's miracles. 
In Medina I heard the words of the Apostle of Arabia.

하느님께서 모세에게 자신의 모습을 드러냈을 때 
나는 시나이 산에 있었다.
그리고 나는 요르단의 강가에서 나사렛 사람의 기적을 보았다.
또 메디나에서는 아라비아의 사도(使徒)가 하는 말을 들었다.

Behold me now a prisoner of doubt.

지금 의심의 죄수가 된 나를 보라.

I have seen Babylon's strength 
and Egypt's glory and the greatness of Greece. 
My eyes cease not upon the smallness and poverty of their works.
I have sat with the witch of Endor and the priests of Assyria 
and the prophets of Palestine, and I cease not to chant the truth.

나는 바빌론의 힘과 이집트의 영광 그리고 희랍의 위대함도 보았다.
나의 눈은 그들이 이룬 업적들의 사소함뿐 아니라 빈곤함도 보았다.
나는 엔더의 마녀들과 같이 앉아 있었고 아시리아의 사제들과
팔레스타인의 예언자들과도 같이 앉아 있었으며
언제나 진리의 노래를 부르는 것을 멈추지 않았다.

I have learned the wisdom that descended on India, 
and gained mastery over poetry that welled from the Arabian's heart, 
and hearkened to the music of people from the West.

나는 인도에서 전해 내려오는 지혜를 배우기도 하였고, 
아라비아 사람들의 가슴속에서 샘솟는 시가(詩歌)에 대해서도 정통하기도 하였으며, 
서쪽사람들의 음악에 귀를 기울이기도 하였다.

Yet am I blind and see not; my ears are stopped and I do not hear.
그러나 나는 아직도 눈이 멀어 보지 못하고 귀가 막혀 듣지 못한다.

I have borne the harshness of unsatiable conquerors, 
and felt the oppression of tyrants and the bondage of the powerful.

나는 결코 만족할 줄 모르는 지배자의 잔인함을 견뎌 왔으며
폭군의 억압과 힘있는 자들의 속박을 느껴왔다.

Yet am I strong to do battle with the days.

이제 나는 시대와 싸울 만큼 강해졌다.

All this have I heard and seen, and I am yet a child. 
In truth shall I hear and see the deeds of youth, 
and grow old and attain perfection and return to God.

이 모든 것들을 듣고 보아왔지만 나는 아직도 어린아이다.
나는 진실하게 젊은이들의 행위를 보고 들을 것이며 
점점 늙어가면서 완전함에 이루고 신에게 다시 돌아 갈 것이다.
